No one ever thought a hard solid object could be a piece of art and a figure of durable art. Wood has been a staple material to mankind. Wood has been often used to light flames during early times. Wood, as old as the world itself, has also been used to shelter man, provide man with a tool to work on and sit on, and has been used as a medium for crafting. The art of crafting or making things out of wood is called woodworking. By simple definition, it is the forming or shaping of any wood to produce something useful and decorative.

Woodworking is among the earliest skill man learned, along with stone and mud. It is believed that woodworking development was closely tied to the development of civilization. When civilization was improving, so was woodworking. Egyptians and Chinese were two ancient civilizations that worked with wood as part of daily living. They used the kind of wood available in their region, until transportation and trade made it possible for craftsmen to work with other kinds of wood.

Wood products are found everywhere especially in each household. Simple to complex tasks can be done using different wood materials. You can build an attractive birdhouse or a multi-purpose table as long as you have the tools you need and guidance from an expert. Not all types of wood can be used to make certain furniture. There are furniture that require solid stock, such as tables and chairs. Cabinets and other man made panel structures are made out of plywood. Working and crafting furniture is not as easy as it may look. It’s a skill that should be developed over time.

Most of woodworks require bending of the material. Bending of wood is not as easy as bending any object. Remember, wood is a really solid material. What you have to do first is to cut the outside radius or any shape you wish to make and cut an inside radius. After that, cut out many strips of your wood using a razor cut device. Once you have the desired number of strips on hand, you are now ready to glue it up. Apply glue on one surface of each strip and pile and glue them all up. Once you have glued them up, put the glued strips on top of the outside/inside wood radius you cut earlier. This phase is the clamping all of the strips on the form. As much as possible, use a peg to act as a buffer between the clamp and the first strip. Clamp the center portion of the strips then extend to both ends using same clamping device. Leave it as it is and give it some time to adapt to its new form. After some hours, you may now remove the clamps. You must have a consistent curved wood, same as the shape of your form.
